The Town of Cumberland, Indiana, is situated along the Historic National Road, east of Indianapolis at the boundary between Marion and Hancock counties. Established as a plat on July 7, 1831, Cumberland derives its name from Cumberland, Maryland, the eastern terminus of the historic route.
